Pigeons and Statues – by Arnie Wohlgemut
Now there is a visual!
I’m pretty sure you have experience as a pigeon and as a statue… but let me explain.
About 4 years into my career in management I felt I was losing it. I really felt like a statue. It seemed I was standing still and, from above, the crap was falling – landing on and sticking to me.
Looking back, I can see if from a different point of view – I understand that my own immaturity in management and leadership was taking its toll. I took things much too personally.
A few months ago, when I came across this quote:
“Sometimes you are a pigeon; sometimes you are a statue”
It stuck with me. So, I wrote it in my journal as something to research.
Here’s what I uncovered:
- I took everything personal. Being a type A person, I really wanted to succeed in this new career path. I became defensive and I even considered finding opportunities to be come the pigeon!
- I had no one to vent to or who would provide a different point of view!
Now after all these years, I have learned a few key things:
- In the face of adversity and trials, stay the course. Don’t take the criticism personal, in fact, listen carefully, ask good questions. Who knows you might learn something.
- If you are convinced that the path you’re on is correct, persevere. Remember that adversity and trials will only produce perseverance.
- Keep your ego and attitude in check. This will set you apart from the pack and those that wish to criticize will at least respect you for your strength in character.
- Find a person who you trust, who will listen, who will encourage you when you need to vent.
I hope that ever time you face adversity and trials, the image of a pigeon and a statue will come to mind and help build new habits.
